Atascadero highlight
Historic downtown
The Italian Renaissance-style City Hall, built between 1914 and 1918, anchors a downtown that retains the character of Atascadero's founding as a utopian planned community in 1913.

Edward Gardner Lewis, a magazine publisher, purchased the Atascadero Ranch in 1912 and established the city as a planned utopian settlement on July 4, 1913. At the center of his vision was a distinctive City Hall built between 1914 and 1918 using bricks made from local clay, which stands today as California Historical Landmark No. 958. The building embodies the architectural aspirations of Lewis's design, which included an Italian Renaissance style and grand public spaces.
The downtown remains the civic heart of Atascadero, featuring the Sunken Gardens that were part of the original community plan. These gardens include sculptures and serve as public gathering spaces where residents and visitors experience the landscape that shaped the city's identity. Though much has changed since the earliest days, the downtown district preserves the intention that Lewis established: a community center designed for public life.
A downtown with this depth of history and intentional design is the kind of place where people build lives that last. Term life insurance sized to a mortgage, family needs, or a business mirrors that commitment: it is protection for the span of years when other people depend on the stability you provide.
